Degree flexibility

Here at Stirling, we believe in choice. That's why we offer more than 170 single and combined courses, and you may specialise in multiple subject areas as part of your own combined honours degree.

This flexibility is available on many of our courses, while other more vocational degrees that are aimed at specific careers (e.g. nursing, paramedic science, social work, and education) do not follow the flexible structure.

See how our flexible undergraduate degrees work

If you know exactly which subjects you’d like to study, you can apply for one of our combined courses now – or, thanks to our flexible course structure, you can try out different subjects and decide which ones you’d like to combine later.

After you’ve been accepted onto a course you’ll sign up for three modules to take in your first semester. At least one of those modules will be in the subject you've picked as your degree, but the others could be from the wide range of modules we offer in other subjects.

For example, a Film and Media student could take Psychology and French. Or an Environmental Science student could take Economics and Politics.

We have over 170 combinations for you to choose from.

Making your choices

If you end up falling in love with your new subjects, after Semester 3, you’ll be able to mix and match two subjects for a Combined Honours degree if you have taken the required modules.

That means if you’re a Marketing student who fell in love with Film and Media in your first year, you can either drop Marketing to focus on Film and Media or combine both to get a degree in Marketing and Film and Media.

You don’t have to combine subjects – and you don’t have to switch either. But here at Stirling we think you deserve the choice and flexibility you need to make the most of your time at university - and be the difference in whatever it is you’d like to do.
