Research excellence

¾ of our research activity is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent (REF2014)

The University of Stirling is a place where thinkers do. We truly believe that great ideas and ground-breaking research can transform our society and help change economic, social and cultural connections across Scotland, the UK and the entire world. Research is a critical aspect of our learning and teaching.

As a postgraduate student, you’ll be given an insight into that research – and will also earn the opportunity to make key research contributions of your own.

Our collaborative approach

Collaboration is at the core of our research strategy. That means working across our five faculties, and with other universities, businesses, the public sector and governments at home and overseas, to deliver interdisciplinary research that makes a difference to people’s lives. We are proud to have research collaborations in more than 170 countries across the world. Whether it’s preventing cancer, advising governments on policy or improving food security, our researchers work together to be the difference and solve real-world problems.

Research with impact

Our performance in the most recent Research Excellence Framework was outstanding, strengthening our position as one of the top research-led universities in the UK. During the last decade, the volume of our research classified as world-leading has more than doubled. Almost three-quarters of our research activity is now classed as either world-leading or internationally excellent.

Industry-leading hubs

Our academics are experts in their fields, and their work is internationally recognised for producing research with real impact. Each of our five faculties host sector-leading research groups. They serve as crucial information hubs for researchers from all over the world, and have evolved to establish strong and internationally recognised reputations.
