Scottish nursing students

Tuition fees

The Scottish Government Health Directorate (SGHD) pays tuition fees for all Scottish students on pre-registration courses.

Nursing bursary

All eligible students can apply for a bursary each year through the Nursing and Midwifery Student Bursary Fund (NMSB), administered by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS).

You can receive:

  • a bursary of up to £6,578 which will increase to £8,100 in 2019/20
  • an extra £60 Initial Expenses Allowance in your first year of study
  • a Dependants’ Allowance

English, Welsh and Northern Irish nursing students

Fees are payable by UK students who live outside of Scotland. See our individual course pages for the specific fees.

EU nursing students

The Scottish Government Health Directorate (SGHD) currently pays the fees for EU nursing students (currently confirmed for students starting in 2018/19 and 2019/20) but there is no bursary available to EU students.

Funding provision is subject to change pending the timing and terms of the UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union. Find out more on our EU student advice page.
