Sports science services

We offer a range of sport science services varying from lab-based fitness testing to field-based fitness and performance assessments.

The tests are suitable for both individual and team sport athletes and provide valuable insight in to current physical abilities. The feedback provided in your assessment is used to identify strengths and weaknesses, track progress and provide tools to individualise training programmes.

Physiological assessments

Physiological Assessments are available every Monday from 3pm to 7.30pm.

VO2max test

Key outcomes: maximal heart rate, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)
Duration: 45min

During this maximal test exercise, intensity is gradually increased until volitional exhaustion at which point your maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and maximal heart rate is measured. The VO2max provides a valuable measure of your current cardiorespiratory health status and is strongly linked to performance in endurance events. This test is recommended for anyone wishing to measure their current cardiorespiratory fitness for health and performance.

Incremental lactate test (running or cycling)

Key outcomes: lactate turnpoints / thresholds, heart rate training zones, power output training zones (cycling), pace zones (running).
Duration: 90min

During this incremental running/cycling test, intensity is progressively increased (i.e. speed or power output) whilst different physiological markers, such as heart rate and blood lactate, are measured. The submaximal activity can assess valuable indicators of current physical state including speed/power output at lactate thresholds. The indicators assessed are strongly linked to endurance performance, making this a test that is regularly implemented in elite running, cycling and triathlon teams.

After the session, participants will receive a personalised report, incorporating test results, current training zones and detailed insight into their physiological capabilities!

Full profile – Incremental lactate test and assessment of VO2max (running and cycling)

Key outcomes: lactate turnpoints / thresholds, heart rate training zones, power output training zones (cycling), pace zones (running), maximal heart rate, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max)
Duration: 90min

A combined package of all tests outlined above, the full profile offers a comprehensive assessment of cardiorespiratory and endurance levels for those looking to improve performance or measure current fitness levels.

Field-based assessments

For sport teams, in consultation with our sport scientists, there is also the possibility to book different field-based assessments such as (or a combination of):

  • sprint tests
  • field-based aerobic tests (e.g. YoYo tests, multistage shuttle run tests)
  • jump capability assessments
  • agility tests
  • field-based lactate testing

Field-based assessments available on request all year round. Please contact our Sports Science team to discuss your requirements.
