Summer holiday programme 2018

University of Stirling Sporting Stars
2018 Children’s Summer Programme

16 July – 10 August

Join Team Stirling for a summer of sport and start your child on their way to becoming the University of Stirling’s next Commonwealth Games medallist!

As Scotland’s University of Sporting Excellence we want to inspire the next generation of sporting stars, and our Summer Sports programme will introduce and develop skills across a range of sports. We offer various specialised training programmes over a number of weeks including:

  • Train to Compete
  • FUNdamentals
  • group lessons

Train to Compete

“Train to Compete” is aimed at developing those young athletes with a mix of performance training and fun. The following sports are included: Swimming, Running, Laser, Conditioning plus an option of either Cycling or Fencing.  Focusing around a mix of sports included in Modern Pentathlon and Triathlon, this is a perfect opportunity to hone your skills around these events.  Book for either a full day or full week.

To ensure athletes get the most from their training, we ask that all participants are already competent triathletes / pentathletes. As a guide, participants would already be attending coached training at a Club and be able to comfortably swim 400m (16 lengths) continuous front crawl and jog 2.5km as a warm-up for running.  No experience of fencing or laser is necessary and full equipment will be provided, but athletes wishing to cycle should bring their own bikes and helmets.

For this programme, training maturity and enthusiasm are more important than age, but if athletes are still at Primary school, please get in touch with to discuss whether the training would be suitable before signing up.

FUNdamentals

FUNdamentals is all about participation and fun! These sport specific sessions will allow you to develop movement skills and coordination while participating in a group environment. FUNdamentals is tailored around core university sports whilst offering a variety of others – the skills learnt through participation in multiple sports will benefit your child in their future activities.

FUNdamentals are aimed towards children currently in primary school. Sessions will be delivered in smaller groups: P1 – 3 and P4 – 6 groups. Book for either a full week, full day, or a half day.

Group Lessons

Choose from either, swimming, tennis, or golf classes for children of all ages. These daily lessons are perfect to mix and match.

  • Swimming

Pre-school swim provides children aged three to five the opportunity to become water confident and develop core aquatic skills (without adult assistance but with buoyancy aids where required).

Swim Skills 1 is for children from the age of five who can’t swim, or can swim only a short distance. In this class, children further develop their water confidence and develop their aquatic skills without buoyancy aids.

Swim Skills 2 is for more advanced swimmers who have successfully passed Swim Skills 1. Here, we introduce basic stroke development technique, aquatic breathing and submersion.

  • Tennis

Pre-school tennis is aimed at children aged three to five, where the classes develop hand-eye co-ordination skills in a fun and challenging environment. Children learn to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities, based on the fundamental areas of balance, co-ordination, agility, movement and racket and ball skills.

Mini-red is aimed for children aged five to seven, is played on a mini-sized court with small rackets and sponge balls. It is an ideal introduction to the game learning to serve, rally and score with a slow foam or felt ball. Mini-orange played can be accommodated in this class.

Green/Yellow is aimed at children aged nine and above with players putting their skills into practice on a full sized court but with a slightly softer ball.  Drills and games can be adapted depending on playing experience, and we encourage both green and yellow players to join this session.
