COVID-19 (coronavirus) update - Sport

As per the latest government and public health advice, the University's sports facilities and activities are currently closed until further notice. The safety and wellbeing of staff, students and members is of utmost importance and this has formed the basis of the decision.

We thank you for your patience and understanding and we will provide relevant updates via our regular communication channels.  More detailed information regarding the closure and the impact on services and activities can be found in the sections below.

  • Facilities

    All sports facilities will be closed from 10pm on Tuesday 17 March until further notice. This includes:

    • Swimming pool
    • Gym
    • Tennis centre
    • Sports hall
    • Squash courts
    • Artificial pitches
    • Athletics track
    • Golf course
    • Physiotherapy clinic
  • Classes, lessons, courses

    All classes, lessons and courses will be postponed from 10pm on Tuesday 17 March until further notice. This includes:

    • Fitness classes
    • Young at Heart classes
    • Pilates, yoga and personal training courses
    • All tennis, swimming and golf lessons (tennis cancelled from 6.30pm on 17 Mar)
    • Get Active beginner courses
    • Just Play Sport and Social Sport leagues
    • Children's holiday programmes

    We will contact you directly to advise on how we manage the postponement/cancellation of activities and would appreciate your co-operation in this regard as we deal with a quickly evolving situation.

  • Events

    All events planned until Sunday 10 May will be cancelled. Any events taking place after this date will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and organisers and participants will receive further updates over the coming weeks.

    No cancellation charges will apply during the closure period and any advance booking payments will be refunded.

  • Parkrun

    The weekly Saturday morning parkrun event will be cancelled until further notice. Please visit parkrun.org for the latest updates from parkrun.

  • Memberships

    Thank you for your patience since we announced the closure of the sports facilities from Tuesday 17 March 2020. We would like to update as follows:

     

    Membership fees paid by Direct Debit:

    All direct debits will be frozen with immediate effect and no money will be collected in April or beyond, for the duration of the closure.

    You do not need to take any further action as we will administer the process.

     

    Annual memberships:

    An extension will be applied to your membership equating to the duration of the closure period.  If you are happy with this, you do not need to take any further action as we will administer the process.

    If however you would like a refund on the remainder of your annual membership, please contact us via sport.membership@stir.ac.uk

     

    Staff Salary Deductions:

    Monthly deductions will be frozen with immediate effect and no money will be deducted in April or beyond, for the duration of the closure.

    You do not need to take any further action as we will administer the process in liaison with colleagues from Human Resources.

  • Group / club bookings

    All group and club bookings are cancelled until further notice. Any booking payments made in advance will be refunded.

  • Staying active

    Our fitness team will remain on hand to help you keep active during the closure period so check out the daily home workouts we'll be sharing on our Facebook and Instagram channels. Plus, our new online class timetable is now live, offering a range of real-time classes with our fitness team.

    Our new timetables are part of the University's Be Connected programme - a series of online activities and resources which have been designed to ensure students, staff and the wider University community stay connected with each other, and remain healthy, active and in the moment.
