Information for SME employers

Through the Stirling Internship Programme we’ve partnered with Santander Universities to offer small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) subsidies towards providing internship opportunities.

Is your business eligible for a subsidy?

  • You must be an organisation with 250 employees or less.
  • Annual turnover of £50 million or less.
  • Your company must be registered and based in the UK.
  • Includes companies, sole traders, partnerships and charities.
  • You can’t apply for further Santander UK plc funding to extend an intern contract or employ the same student or graduate after the internship has completed.

If you’re eligible you can apply for a subsidy of £612.50 or £1,531.25 (No VAT). Depending on the type of internship option you choose, you’ll be able to get one of these subsidy amounts towards or in full payment for your internship. Subsidies are provided on a first come, first served basis until all funds are used up.

What types of internship can I offer?

Fully subsidised 70 hour part-time internships:

You could choose to offer a part-time internship to our students for 70 hours. During the academic year, the internship could be 7 hours per week for 10 weeks. This is to ensure that the student has time to fit their work around their academic timetable.

If you’d like the student to work over the summer, then the internship can span anywhere from 5 weeks to 10 weeks. Ideally, the internship should be 7 hours per week for 10 weeks.

You’ll receive a full subsidy of £612.50 (no VAT), so long as you’re paying the intern at least £8.75 an hour.

Full-time subsidised summer internships:

For full-time summer internships, we’ll pay a half subsidy of £1,531.25 for 10 weeks full-time (35 hour week).
