This year we are launching a brand new recreational sports programme, exclusively for students, called Get Active which aims to engage as many students as possible in physical activity. It has been designed for students who want to exercise, try a new sport and merely have some fun and enjoy sport in a social environment away from competition.
It’s a great way to keep fit, socialise and meet new people and, with over 14 different drop-in sessions available per week, there is something for everyone. There is no long term commitment needed so students can just turn up and play whenever they like. Sessions have been designed to welcome all abilities with a choice of two different types of sessions; Beginner and Just Play.
New to netball or haven’t played in a while? These sessions are a great way to learn some basic netball techniques from our student Netball Activator. You will have a chance to practice these techniques throughout the session and get some game time.
Bring down some friends to challenge or come along and meet some new people to play a game of badminton with.
Come along and get into shape with this likeminded group of social joggers. This session will get you off the couch and running in no time. Enjoy going at an easy pace and being outdoors on our great campus.
Come down and get involved in dodging, ducking and diving away from those balls. Fun, mixed team sport to get involved with.
Fast tennis is a faster and simpler way to play a game of tennis. The fundamentals are the same but there are 4 simple rules. Come down, hit a few balls and challenge fellow students to a game.
Come along and play recreational football. Teams will be organised at the start of the session. Make sure you pre-book a slot to guarantee some game time at the Sports Centre Reception.
Go Spike is an initiative to get more people playing volleyball. Volleyball is an exciting, mixed team sport which is very social. Come along and get some tips from our Volleyball Activators so you can get involved with playing games throughout the session.
Come and try an easier, quicker mixed team version of hockey, without the need for goalkeepers. Great way to try hockey or get back into it whilst meeting new people and getting fit.
Korfball is a dynamic cross between netball, basketball and handball. It is an exciting mixed team sport which relies on good teamwork so it’s a great way to socialise and get active. Rules will be explained so come and give this sport a try.
This session will get you fit, whilst being able to enjoy our great campus. The Outdoor Fitness Activator will lead a circuit class or a jogging session using the campus to improve your overall fitness and strength.
Come for a social swim to meet new people or bring along a bunch of your mates. Recreational swimming in our 25m pool.
Join one of our Sport Activators on a group walk exploring our campus or the local area. Great way to meet new people, explore and improve your step count for the day.
The Stirling Jam is an informal, social 3v3 basketball tournament. Teams will be organised and mixed up at the start of each session to play as many games as possible.
Get involved with some friendly competition in our table tennis tournaments.
Tartan Touch is a new game being introduced by Scottish Rugby. It’s a simple, social game of touch rugby for everyone. With only 8 simple rules, it’s easy to learn how to play and is a game for all abilities.
These sessions are coach-led by our friendly Lead Activators, perfect for students who want to learn some basic techniques whilst socialising and getting active. There will be practices throughout the session to learn techniques, followed by game time.
Just Play sessions are all about turning up and getting active through game play. These session are about socialising through sport and all abilities are welcome. Sessions will be led by our friendly Sport Activators which will ensure everyone has a great time and provide tips if they are wanted.
The Get Active timetable will run during term-time from Monday 25th of September - Tuesday the 5th of December 2017 (excluding reading week 23rd - 29th of October).
To participate in sessions at the Gannochy Sports Centre, all you have to do is register at the Sports Centre Reception and take your receipt to the session. Sessions are free to Sports Centre members and £2 for non-members. For all other sessions on campus, all you have to do is turn-up and register with the Sport Activator, free of charge. All equipment will be provided, however please come dressed in appropriate sports attire.
By attending sessions you will earn an active point towards your accommodation for the chance to win the Most Active Hall Award at the end of the year.
There will also be Get Active pop-up events happening throughout the semester for encouraging mass participation so keep an eye out on our social media for updates and more information.
