Carnegie-Caledonian PhD Scholarship

  • Deadline: Scholarship applications for 2017 entry are now closed. Information for new applicants will be available in October 2017.

Background information

The Caledonian Research Foundation supports and encourages independent research in Scotland. The Foundation provides funding for postgraduate scholarships which are awarded through the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland.

Eligibility and availability

There is no preference for subject in awarding the scholarships, and at least one award each year is made in a non-scientific discipline. The scholarships are offered to academically outstanding candidates intending to study on a PhD programme at any University in Scotland.

  • The awards are tenable for three years and will not normally be made for a lesser period.
  • The scholarships cover tuition fees, maintenance allowance, research and travel allowance.
  • Applicants must be graduates of a Scottish University with a First Class Honours degree.
  • Students in their final year of an undergraduate degree who are expected to obtain a First-Class Honours degree may apply, withdrawing if they fail to do so.
  • Applicants who are in receipt of a Government-funded Research Studentship, Research Council award or comparable scholarship will not be considered.
  • International students who hold a first class honours degree from a Scottish university are eligible to apply. The Carnegie Trust will only cover the cost of the equivalent fees for UK/EU students and universities are expected to waive the outstanding balance for international fees.

The University of Stirling can submit 3 nominations in each academic year.

How do I apply?

Prospective supervisors must submit the completed nomination form to Stirling Graduate School ( by the published deadline.  Following an internal selection process, nominations selected to go to the Carnegie Trust for consideration will be accompanied by a letter of institutional support.
