The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is pleased to offer two postgraduate research studentships at the equivalent of AHRC rates for students starting a research degree programme.

These are bi-annual awards; the next awards will be available for 2021/22 entry and will be confirmed in August 2020.

Background information

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities is pleased to offer two postgraduate research studentships at the equivalent of AHRC rates.

These studentships will be awarded competitively and applicants may come from any of the various subject areas of the Faculty: Communications, Media and Culture, Law, Philosophy, History, Politics, English (including Publishing Studies and Creative Writing), Languages, and Religion, with the intention of attracting the best possible candidates for research work within or across these respective disciplines.

Value of the Studentships

The funds will extend across a two-year MPhil (or four years part-time), or three-year PhD period (six years part-time), and will cover fees at Home/EU rates and maintenance equivalent to AHRC rates. The maintenance for MPhil is for a period of 24 months (pro rota) or for PhD is for a period of 36 months (pro rata). For non-Home/EU applicants, please note that the successful candidates are expected to cover the difference between Home/EU and overseas tuition fees during the period of studies. You should be able to get annual fees on the University website.

Eligibility and availability

In order to be eligible, you must already have been offered a place on one of our postgraduate research programmes. If you hold a conditional offer, you are still eligible to apply. See further details here on how to apply for a postgraduate research programme.

Applicants should not already be holding external funding awards for the same academic session, but they may of course be in the process of applying for other awards.

The studentships are open to Home/EU and Overseas applications, subject to the necessary eligibility and visa requirements. You are required to obtain your supervisor’s signature in support of your application. You are also strongly advised to discuss your studentship application with your supervisor prior to submission.

How do I apply?

Application form provided below must be used. Applicants should also submit

  • A complete application form (available here in August 2020)
  • Full transcripts – copies of degree certificates alone do not provide sufficient evidence. Transcripts should be in English, and where necessary a certified translation should be provided

Submission deadline

As well as making a full postgraduate research programme application, applicants wishing to be considered for these studentships should complete the Postgraduate Research  Studentship Application Form  (available here in August 2020), and submit it electronically to the Graduate Studies inbox, fahgs@stir.ac.uk.

Notification of awards

Please note that by submitting your application, you agree to have your application reviewed the Panel of Studentship Committee. Applications will be ranked according to academic merit by a Faculty Awards Committee.

For those who apply to AHRC DTP2 Scheme

Students who have applied for the AHRC DTP Scheme will automatically be considered for the Faculty Studentships. There is no need to submit a separate application if you have applied for the AHRC DTP2 studentships.
