Consultancy

Conducting work for external organisations

Consultancy is a key area of the University’s knowledge exchange activity and is defined as:

“an activity carried out by staff within their professional field, through which knowledge and expertise are transferred to an external organisation”.

A whole range of organisations across the public and private sectors can benefit from the application of the University’s knowledge through consultancy.  We have systems in place to support academics in this area and highlight the significant benefits to the University that can come from such activities (namely the enhancement of external relationships, its reputation and that of its staff, as well as the income it brings).

What can we do for you?

The Research Funding & Development Team will support you, assisting and advising you on a range of issues including:

  • The approval process
  • Costing and pricing your proposal (and the difference between the two)
  • Professional indemnity insurance cover (which is offered by the University to anyone practicing consultancy in its name)
  • Intellectual property rights (an important aspect of any commercial activity)

Further detail is available for staff in the University's Consultancy Policy.

The Research and Enterprise Office will help with contract negotiations and authorisation from the university for official acceptance of contracts and, once your consultancy project has started, brief colleagues in the Finance Office to facilitate project set-up.
