Photo guidelines

In order to ensure that your image maintains high quality when produced onto the all weather boards please follow the guidelines below: 

  • Full Colour or Black & White 
  • Square or portrait image 
  • High resolution, the file should be a minimum of 300 dpi at A3 size (Top Tip: Set your camera to high resultion with no image compression). 
  • No explanatory text should be embedded in your image 
  • Either jpg or tiff format will be accepted - no other formats will be accepted. 
  • Please do not distort your imagery. 
  • While the image can include people and even the researcher themselves the image needs to tell the story of your research not you conducting your research 
  • Similarily we would advise against images solely of scientific equipment

Image Copyright

By entering this competition, you consent to the University of Stirling retaining the right to use all submitted entries (including those not chosen to be reproduced) in materials without requiring further permission from you. The materials can include, but are not limited to, the exhibitions (printed and online). the website and print materials. As an entrant you will retain all intellectual property, including copyright, but as such you hereby grant the University of Stirling a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in perpetuity to reproduce works based on your submission without any obligation to compensate you. The owner of the work will be appropriately acknowledged (e.g. (C) 2017 Name).

The University will not be liable in any way for an entry. It is your responsibility to:

  • Secure permission from anyone in your photograph by ensuring your have written permission to use the image by completing the University's photography consent form - this form should be uploaded during the submission process.
  • Ensure that there are no infringements of third party intellectual property rights. You must either wholly own the image, or obtain the written authority of contributors both to submit the image to this competition and to grant the University of Stirling a non-exclusive royalty-free licence to reproduce the works based on your submission. 

Terms & Conditions

The prize money can only be used for research purposes, which will be outlined in the letter confirming the award and value. 

The images are intended to tell the story of the research, be inspiring and engaging to a non-academic audience and take the viewer on a journey. Please see the section on Photo guidelines for more information.
