My academic background is in political science, sociology and modern history. I am a qualified & experienced secondary school teacher in modern studies, history and religious education. Teaching I am coordinator for undergraduate modules; SPS9E6 - Sport, Gender, Ethnicity and Identity, SPS9R7 - Readings in Sports Studies, undertake PhD supervision, and contribute to SPS9D8 - Sports Studies Dissertation Supervision and SPSP10 - MSC Dissertation Marking.
My research interests lie in sport's relationship with ethnicity, nationalism, identity, race, religion and politics. I have authored, co-authored and edited several books on these subjects and have published regularly in a wide spectrum of journals, edited books and through various media channels. This research is on-going. In 2001-2002 I was a member of a research group appointed by the Economic and Social Research Council to explore the profiles and identities of those who comprise 2nd and 3rd generation Irish in Britain. I contributed to a similar report commissioned by the Irish Government into the Irish in Britain in 2002.
