About me

About me

I hold the Chair of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Stirling. Most of my academic career has centred on the training of translators and interpreters and I have also worked as a freelance translator, interpreter and lexicographer. I have been a Visiting Professor at the University of Bologna (Italy), the University of La Habana (Cuba) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.

I was Co-I in an AHRC-funded project (2014-2016) that researched the role of State-trained indigenous translators and interpreters in the legislated mediation of indigenous rights in present day Peru. I was the PI in a follow-on project (2018-2019), funded by AHRC/GCRF, that revolved around the role of untrained, female indigenous interpreters in guaranteeing access to human rights, such as justice, education and health, for Peruvian indigenous women in the Andean region. I am an associate researcher in the MELINCO project, funded by the Dirección Xeral de Relacións Exteriores e coa Unión Europea (Spain), which focuses on the role of interlingual mediation in development cooperation.

Research

My research interests lie in the social and cultural dimensions of translation and interpreting, especially in relation to interpreting in public-service settings that involves minoritised communities and to the translation of multimodal texts. I have published and delivered keynote lectures and presentations on these subjects in Europe, America and Asia.

I welcome notes of interest from candidates interested in pursuing doctoral study in all areas of translation and interpreting. I am especially interested in supervising projects that adopt sociological approaches to these disciplines and seek to research the role of linguistic and cultural mediation in the upholding of human rights, the construction, maintenance and repair of trust, and global communication.
