I worked in industry for 11 years employing various operational research ideas in a range of applications. My first 7 years were with the Operational Research Executive of the NCB and British Coal where I used statistical and modelling techniques to investigate issues such as underground transport, equipment selection and the project management of the development of opencast sites.I then moved to YARD, later BAeSema, as a consultant specialising in the management of risk in projects, such as the development of major software systems and new aircraft. In 1991 I joined the Management Science Department of the University of Stirling where I have pursued my interests in modelling complex systems. My particular teaching speciality is project management but I also teach: modelling and simulation, both discrete event and continuous; statistics for postgraduate management students; a variety of case studies based on my industrial and research; research methods
My main interest is the management of stochastic systems. In the past my main application areas have been project management and environmental modelling as an input for offshore risk analyses. In recent years the focus has moved to the design of health care systems.Typically the research involves the construction of simulations of possible healthcare systems in order to understand the interactions, constraints and behaviour in response to stochastic demand. Some research projects concentrate on the development of the models. Other projects are concerned with using the models to assess specific proposals for particular NHS Trusts or analyse general policies for the provision of healthcare.
