My book Pay Up And Play the Game (Cambridge U.P., 1988), a study of professional sport in Britain, won the inaugural North American Society for Sport History international book award.I was also the recipient of the Australian Sport Commission's National Sport Science Education Award for my work on sports violence. My expertise lies in the area of sports social science including history, economics and quantitative analysis. Teaching I am the module co-ordinator for the MSc module Ethics in Sport. I also run a reading unit on ethics in sport for undergraduate students.

Research (2)

My current research projects include examining the symbiotic relationship between sports historians and sports museums; writing a history of the development of the golf club as a British social institution before 1914; analysing the emergence of rules in sport; and looking at the interaction between sport and charity. My next major project will be a revisionist history of Scottish football before the First World War.
