Late-Victorian and modernist studies; the short story; Scottish literature (particularly James Hogg); transatlantic literary studies. I have two substantial editorial projects in hand: The Edinburgh Companion to the Short Story in English, which I'm co-editing with Paul Delaney (Trinity College, Dublin), and a research edition of James Hogg's contributions to overseas periodicals. The latter is supported by a major AHRC grant (£407,000), which I share with my colleague Suzanne Gilbert.
