Irene's research interests are located in the critical analysis of sport as a social and cultural practice. Her work concentrates on sport, nationalism and cultural identity and media representations of identity through sport. Her research focuses on the relationship between sport and nationhood in Scotland, and has included work on football, shinty and curling. She has also examined discourses of nationhood and othering in radio coverage of sport and in sports-related comedy in Scotland. She is curerently working on a new project that examines place of sport in public narratives associated with the independence debate in Scotland. A secondary area of research interest concerns sport and gender.
