About me

Emma is an associate professor based in the NMAHP Research Unit. She joined the unit in 2012 as a lecturer. She specialises in qualitative research methods but also has expertise in quantitative and mixed methods approaches. Emma leads and collaborates on research grants in the fields of families and long-term health conditions and methodological research in the area of qualitative evidence synthesis, specifically meta-ethnography. She led an NIHR-funded project to develop reporting guidance for meta-ethnography (https://emergeproject.org/), led a qualitative evidence synthesis on children's chronic pain management for the World Health Organization, and is currently leading a meta-ethnography of how children and young people with chronic pain and their families experience and perceive their condition, pain services and treatments (https://fundingawards.nihr.ac.uk/award/NIHR128671). Emma previously led a project funded by the Chief Scientist Office and Cystic Fibrosis Trust to develop an audio-visual intervention to encourage adherence to chest physiotherapy in children with cystic fibrosis. Between April 2007-March 2012, Emma was employed as a research fellow on several research grants at the Universities of Stirling and Edinburgh including: the National Institute for Health Research Service Delivery and Organisation programme funded ‘Information for choice: what people need, prefer and use'; the Scottish School of Primary Care funded ‘MALT' (Scottish Multiple And Long Term Conditions) study; and a qualitative study of men's and women's experiences of stroke. Prior to her academic role, Emma worked as a researcher and project manager in the commercial and voluntary sectors including for a mental health service provider, a design consultancy, and a telecommunications company. Emma has an MA (honours) in psychology and French and a PhD in psychology from the University of Glasgow. Research skills & expertise: qualitative research - qualitative evidence synthesis, thematic and framework analysis, narrative analysis, qualitative secondary analysis, visual and projective methods, focus groups, in-depth interviews, using NVIVO software; systematic reviewing; quantitative methods - experimental design, parametric and non-parametric statistics, questionnaire design
