After graduating in 1979 with a BSc in Nursing from what is now Abertay University I began my career as a nurse in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. In 1991 I joined the Department of Primary Care, University of Dundee, as a trial coordinator for a UK study in to the management of asthma attacks. This was the start of a 21 year association with the department during which time I was involved with the design and operation of a large number of asthma related projects focusing on improving the management of asthma in primary care. In 2006 I was awarded a 5 year Primary Care Research Career Award from the CSO.My research during this period involved using multi-level modelling techniques to investigate issues of asthma control. This work was submitted for the award of PhD awarded in 2010. During the fellowship I also had a seconded clinical post as a respiratory specialist nurse with the long term conditions team in G&NEF Community Health Partnership. In addition I participated as a co-tutor in the primary care component of the undergraduate medical student programme at the University of Dundee. In 2012 I took up a post as a clinical research fellow within the NMAHP Research Unit.
