Basic Functions

Slide Recording

A slide recording is a PowerPoint slide show enhanced with audio, video and inking. The easiest way to create one, is by creating a PowerPoint presentation first and then record on top of your slides.

  • Go to the slide where you want to begin your recording.
  • On the toolbar, select the Mix tab.
  • In the Record group at the far left of the tab, click Slide Recording.

At this point, you need to decide which elements you want to record. Under Audio and Video:

  • Select the size and resolution of your video:
    • Thumbnail (low resolution recording).
    • Full Screen (high resolution recording).
  • Select the camera you want to use:
    • Integrated Camera (if recording on a laptop with no external camera).
    • No Camera (if you want to record only audio).
  • Select the audio device you want to use.
    • Integrated Microphone (if recording on a laptop with no external microphone).
    • No Microphone (if you want no audio).
    • Adjust the Volume, by dragging the square left/right.

To add Inking.

  • Select the pen (Fine Pen, Medium Pen, Thick Pen) you want to draw with on your slides.
    • Use Eraser to make corrections.
  • Select the Colour of your ink.

When you are done, you are ready to begin Recording.

Screen Recording

With screen recording you can caption and also narrate, all the actions you took in any other program on a computer that uses windows, instead of only posting screenshots.

  • On the Mix tab select Screen Recording.
  • At the top of the screen select Screen Area (the cursor will change into crosshairs and audio will be already selected).
  • Click and drag the area of the screen you want to record.
  • Click Record
  • When you are done click Stop (the recording will be added to the current slide).

Interactive Content

Interactive content is what you add to your Mix (quizzes, polls, science and math simulations and videos from Khan Academy), which your viewers can interact with directly and you can observe their results afterwards.

  • Go to the slide where you want your interactive content to appear.
  • Select the Mix tab
  • In the Insert group select Quizzes Videos Apps.
  • At the top of the Lab Apps for Office select:
    • MY APPS to insert one of the apps you have downloaded.
    • STORE to insert a new app.
  • Click the app you want to read a description of it.
  • To insert it, select Trust it or Cancel to return back.
  • To preview your apps like one of your viewers, click Slide Show in the bottom right of the PowerPoint video.

To view the analytics from your quizzes and polls after you have published your Mix, go to your Uploaded Mixes on the My Mixes page and select Analytics. Under the title of your Mix, select by exercises.

* After you add interactive content to a slide, you can copy paste it on other slides. Furthermore, you can download apps from the office store, but Office Mix collects analytics only for the apps that are included in the Lab Apps for Office.

Uploading/Exporting your Office Mix

Upload to Mix

When you select the Upload to Mix option, your Mix is published to your My Mixes page in the cloud of the Office Mix website. This way, your file will be saved and you will be able to share it using its URL, or either link it or embedded on other websites.

  • On the Mix tab in the Mix group, select Upload to Mix.
  • Click Next.
  • If you are not signed in, choose the account you want to sign in with.
  • Indicate how you want your mix to be uploaded.
    • This is a new Mix (when you create a new mix).
    • Updating an existing Mix (when you want to overwrite an existing Mix).
    • Enable playback on mobile device (if you also want a video version and add closed captions).
  • Click Next.
  • In the side panel, select Show me my Mix (here you can add the Details of your mix, set the Permission & Sharing features, add an Email where you want to send it by using its URL and also add Close Captions).
  • Click Save.

Export to video

When you select the Export to Video option, your Mix is converted into a video that viewers can watch offline. You can save the video on your desired location, but this will not automatically save it to your My Mixes page. By saving your Mix as a video, means that you can treat it as a video and publish it on YouTube or other sites. But because it won’t be a Mix all the interactive properties (hyperlinks, quizzes, polls, simulations, etc.) and the Analytics data will be unavailable.

  • On the Mix tab in the Video group, select Export to Video.
  • In the side panel, choose a video resolution from the Choose Video Size list.
  • Set the time where one slide advances to another with the Seconds spent on each slide option.
  • Click Next.
  • Choose a filename and location for your video and click Save.
