Seminal points in the history of Slovakia will be explored in a lecture by the country’s ambassador to the UK.
Ľubomír Rehák will discuss how Slovakia is celebrating a series of important anniversaries in 2018.
Twenty-five years ago, the Slovak Republic was established – and, 100 years ago, the common state of the Czechs and Slovaks was proclaimed.
Mr Rehák will recall these and other historical moments of Slovak history – many of those, coincidentally, happening in years ending with ‘8’, such as the Munich Agreement of 1938, the Communist putsch of 1948 or the Soviet invasion of 1968 – in his talk.

Professor Holger Nehring, Chair in Contemporary European History at the University of Stirling, said: “On the occasion of centenary of the Armistice, Mr Rehák will also make a presentation of a new English translation of The Bloody Sonnets – powerful anti-war poetry written in 1914, by the great Slovak poet Pavol Orsagh Hviezdoslav.”
The public lecture, entitled ‘History, Memory, Diplomacy: Slovakia 100 years after the end of the First World War’, will be held on 13 November, from 2-3pm, in the Cottrell Building at the University of Stirling.
