A University of Stirling academic has been elected to a senior role with an international aquaculture organisation.

Professor Herve Migaud, Personal Chair at Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture, has been named President-Elect of the European Aquaculture Society (EAS). The news was announced at the joint World and European Aquaculture Societies conference, AQUA 2018, in Montpellier, France, on 26 August.

I am delighted to have been elected and follow the path of many renowned colleagues from academia and industry before me. I’m looking forward to working with the newly elected board and contribute to the success of the EAS for the coming years.

It is a real source of pride to be the first Institute of Aquaculture staff member to be elected to the EAS board.

Professor Herve Migaud

Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture played a central role at AQUA 2018, with 18 students and staff involved in 20 presentations, chairing three sessions and grant-supported attendance by three PhD students – Samuel Pountey, Michael Clarkson and Savitee Ritchuay. Samuel was one of three students selected by the World Aquaculture Society to present at the opening plenary and his talk earned him top prize in the student spotlight competition.

Professor Migaud highlighted the important role EAS plays in supporting the aquaculture sector in Europe. A key EAS activity is providing a forum for scientists, farmers, governmental and consumer organisations to exchange knowledge, tools and set directions for the future.

Professor Migaud told how AQUA 2018 was a “great success”, with more than 3,000 participants from 109 countries, and 100 companies, taking part. He added: “This is a testimony to a thriving global aquaculture sector.”

In 2019, the EAS annual conference will be held in Berlin, Germany. In 2020, in Cork, Ireland, Professor Migaud will take over as EAS President for two years.
