University academic appointed as editor of leading education journal

Curriculum studies expert Professor Mark Priestley has been appointed as editor of a leading education journal.

Professor Priestley, of the University of Stirling, will be one of two editors of the Curriculum Journal - together with Dr Stavroula Philippou of the University of Cyprus.

They will lead a team of deputy editors from across the world - including Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, The Netherlands and the UK - from January 2019.

Meanwhile, Stirling’s Dr Joe Smith will take the role of Book Reviews Editor.

Professor Priestley said he was delighted to be appointed as editor of the prestigious journal.

“We would like the journal to play a proactive role in the reinvigoration of curriculum scholarship in the UK and internationally,” he said.

“This ambition led to the establishment of the Stirling Network for Curriculum Studies in 2016, and has driven the collaboration of the editors and colleagues over the past few years.”

Professor Priestley and Dr Philippou guest-edited a special issue of the Curriculum Journal in May, with the theme: Curriculum-making as social practice: complex webs of enactment.

The issue featured papers from last year’s European Conference on Curriculum Studies, hosted at the University of Stirling.

Professor Priestley has also been appointed to the Scottish Government’s Curriculum and Assessment Board, established to improve curriculum and assessment policy in education.

The board will look at what is working in the curriculum and where improvement is required, as well as providing advice and guidance to Scottish Ministers.
