Golfers from the University of Stirling are celebrating being named Team of the Year at the 2014 Scottish Golf Awards.

The men’s team picked up the award having retained its European Universities title, added to the British Universities Strokeplay team title.

There were individual accolades too for SLGA Ladies Order of Merit winner Eilidh Briggs and SGU Men’s Order of Merit winner Jack McDonald.

McDonald collected the award on behalf of the Team at a glittering evening at the Hilton Glasgow before a sell-out audience of 650 guests.

The 21-year-old Mathematics student said: “It was a fantastic night and the team is really proud to receive the award. It’s a great achievement to be named Team of the Year, which recognises the results we’ve had both as individuals and as a team.

“The University team has real strength in depth and we’re progressing every year. The programme is very impressive and the support we receive is first class. It shows you don’t have to go to the USA to develop your golf game.”

Raleigh Gowrie, Sports Performance Manager added: “These achievements are testament to the efforts and hard work of the golf scholars and Dean Robertson, our high performance golf coach. They have shown considerable commitment and determination to succeed in both sport and academic studies.”

Also recognised was Stirling alumna Catriona Matthew. She was named Player of the Year, having helped Europe to victory in the Solheim Cup and won the Scottish Open.

A plethora of famous sporting faces attended the evening awards, including the Team GB Men’s Curling team and Scotland’s 1984 Grand Slam rugby heroes, Euan Kennedy and John Beattie.

McDonald was back in action at the weekend, helping Scotland to win the European Nations Cup. The four-man team, which also included Stirling alumni Graeme Robertson and Scott Borrowman, defeated Italy in a play-off at the 17-team tournament.

Both McDonald and Briggs receive scholarship support from the university and from Winning Students, Scotland's national sports scholarships for student athletes.
