A PROFESSOR at the University of Stirling is to take up a new position on the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Professor Tara Fenwick from the University’s School of Education has been appointed to the Council for the next three years. She will serve from August 1 this year to July 31, 2016.
Her appointment – along with other council members – was announced by David Willetts, the UK Minister for Universities and Science.
Professor Fenwick said: “I’m delighted and honoured to be appointed to the Economic and Social Research Council. It’s the UK's largest organisation for funding research on economic and social issues - supporting independent, high quality research which has an impact on business, the public sector and the third sector.
“At any one time the ESRC supports over 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students in academic institutions and independent research institutes.”
Professor Tara Fenwick is a director of an international research network, based at the University, specialising in professional practice, education and learning. Previously she was head of educational studies and Professor at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
Her research focuses on changing professionalisms, professional work and knowledge, cultures of work, and gender studies in work and learning.

- The ESRC Council appointments were made in accordance with the requirements of the Code of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
- None of the new appointees – including Professor Fenwick - have been involved in any relevant political activities in the last five years. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.
- However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None of the appointees have declared any political activity.
- The appointees hold no other ministerial appointments.
- An honorarium of £6,850 per year is currently paid to members and a higher rate of £9,110 is paid to members who chair Policy Committees.
