The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Stirling is delighted to announce that it will host Professor Claire Kramsch as a Carnegie Centenary Scholar from February to May 2017.

Professor Kramsch is an eminent American scholar based at Berkeley, University of California, who specialises in language, languages and language learning from an applied linguistics perspective. In particular, Professor Kramsch is known for her research on the multilingualism, detailing and theorising how multilinguals perceive and articulate the world, and her work on the relationship between language and culture. Her publications are prolific and range from seminal monographs, for example, The Multilingual Subject, to articles in top-ranked applied and socio linguistics journals. Her contribution to academic and intellectual life has been recognised by a number of prestigious international awards, including the Goethe Medal and the MLA Mildenberger Prize.

Not only is Professor Kramsch an excellent scholar, she is also a much loved and respected teacher. She was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award at UC Berkeley, an honour reserved for outstanding teachers and awarded only to three out of 1700 faculty members per year. The awarding committee particularly commended her ability to communicate theoretical and methodological positions with clarity and enthusiasm.

During her time at the University of Stirling, Professor Kramsch will contribute to teaching post graduate and doctoral students in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She will also support and advise researchers and contribute to seminar series. The Universities of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh are also looking forward to welcoming Professor Kramsch, as she will deliver workshops and talks on a range of topics in these institutions during her extended stay.

The highlight of Professor Kramsch’s visit will be a Conference on Multilingualism and Language Learning that will be hosted by the University of Stirling in March 2017.

The Faculty of Social Sciences is extremely grateful to the Carnegie Trust for sponsoring Professor Kramsch as a Carnegie Centenary Scholar.
