Biological and Environmental Sciences is a leading centre for nationally and internationally excellent field and laboratory based specialist research, with a graduate research group of around 40 PhD students. Research students are supported by 24 academic staff, many of whom are experts on national and international bodies, 12 technical staff, and excellent field, laboratory and computing research facilities.
There is a large network of scientific collaboration in Universities, research institutes and industry, both in the UK and overseas, with staff involved in many international projects around the world, including Malaysia, Botswana, Nigeria, Iceland, Norway, Greenland, Ukraine and Hungary. We also house the Scottish office of the British Trust for Ornithology, and have staff from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds associated with the department. The Bumblebee Conservation Trust was started by staff within Biological and Environmental Sciences and is now based in a nearby Innovation Park. The Biological and Environmental Sciences consistently attracts major research grant support from NERC, BBSRC, the Leverhulme Trust, charitable trusts and industrial sponsors.
