How to set up your device

Windows PC

  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi access point ‘UoS Wi-Fi Setup’
  2. Open your web browser  and navigate to a web page, you will be redirected to our login screen.
  3. On the UoS Wi-Fi Setup screen, enter your username as follows;
    Staff: username@stir.ac.uk
    Students: username@students.stir.ac.uk
    then enter password.
  4. Click 'Login'
  5. On the “Welcome” screen click “Start”.
  6. On the “Device Information” screen, add a device name and click “Continue”.
  7. The  “Cisco Network Setup  Assistant” software should automatically be downloaded.
  8. Go to your downloads folder and double click on “Cisco Network Setup  Assistant”. Double click on “Cisco Network Setup  Assistant”. Agree to any security prompts that may  appear.
  9. On the ‘Network Setup Assistant’, click “Start” and agree to the security prompts. When the Network Assistant finishes and presents a green tick, click “Exit”
  10. Your laptop should now be connected to the ‘eduroam’ Wi-Fi network. If not, connect to ‘eduroam’ in your Wi-Fi settings
  11. Your laptop will now connect to eduroam and will auto connect in future.

 

Connecting to the staff and student print systems from Windows

  • go to the Start button, in the Search bar, type:
  • IF YOU’RE A STUDENT: \\studentprint\  then press enter
  • IF YOU’RE A STAFF MEMBER or POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENT: \\pcmfvm13\
  • Enter username in format STUDENTS\username, or for staff and postgraduate research students: STIRLAN\username
  • Enter password
  • Choose print queue you want to install then double click it (eg two-sided, one-sided). Agree to any prompts
  • The next time you go to print from a program such as Word, the appropriate printers should be available in your Print dialog box


Connecting to your uni home folder (H drive) or any network folder from Windows

  • RIGHT click on an empty part of the desktop and choose new=>Shortcut
  • In the 'location' box, students should type \\wide\users\initial of your surname\your username eg. \\wide\users\d\trd00001.  Staff should type the path to your home folder eg \\ness\is\username*
  • Enter password
  • Give your shortcut a name eg ‘Uni home folder’
  • Click ‘Finish’
  • *Enter username in format  STUDENTS\username, or for staff/PGRs: STIRLAN\username
  • The next time you go to print from a program such as Word, the appropriate printers should be available in your Print dialog box

macOS

 Set up Wi-Fi access on your MacBook

  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi access point called “UoS Wi-Fi Setup”. You may see a security warning - please continue.
  2. Open your web browser and navigate to any web page, you will be re-directed to the Wi-Fi login page.  Go past the security warning, look for certificate name 'ccr-psn-01.ise.stir.ac.uk'
  3. Login with your username and password.
    • Staff should type their username in the format username@stir.ac.uk.
    • Students should type their username in the format username@students.stir.ac.uk.
  4. Click “Log In”
  5. On the “Welcome” screen click “Start”.
  6. On the “Device Information” screen, add a device name and click “Continue”.
  7. The  “Network Setup  Assistant” software should automatically be downloaded.
  8. Go to your downloads folder (top right icon in Safari or find downloads folder in the Dock),find and run "Network_Setup _Assistant”.  Agree to any security prompts that may appear.
  9. On the ‘Network Setup Assistant’, click “Start”. Agree to the security prompt and supply your Mac admin password when prompted. When the Network Assistant finishes and presents a green tick, click “Exit”
  10. You should now be connected to the “eduroam” Wi-Fi service and your Mac should auto connect in future 
  11. If you don't get connected 1st time turn Wi-Fi off then on and then reconnect to eduroam.

 

iPhone and iPad (iOS)

 

  1. From ‘Settings’ connect to the Wi-Fi signal ‘UoS Wi-Fi Setup’
  2. Open your web browser (Safari) and navigate to any page, you will be redirected to our login page
  3. On the UoS Wi-Fi Setup screen, enter your username in the format;
    Staff: username@stir.ac.uk
    Students: username@students.stir.ac.uk
    then enter password  then tap ‘Log In’
  4. On the “Welcome” screen click “Start”.
  5. On the “Device Information” screen, add a device name and click “Continue”.
  6. On the device configuration screen, tap ‘Launch Apple Profile and  Certificate Installers Now’.  On the ‘Install profile’ screen, tap ‘Install’ > ‘Install’  > 'Install' > 'Done'
  7. On second “Install Profile” screen, tap Install’ > ‘Install’  > 'Install' > 'Done'
  8. You should then see a message ‘your device has been registered successfully'
  9. From 'Settings' in 'Wi-Fi' tap (i) next to 'UoS Wi-Fi setup'. Tap 'forget'
  10. Tap on 'eduroam' to connect. Your device will auto connect in the future.

 

Android device 

These are generic instructions. The exact process may be slightly different depending on make/model/skin

  1. Go to ‘Settings’ on your phone
  2. Tap ‘Wi-Fi’
  3. Connect to the Wi-Fi access point: ‘UoS Wi-Fi Setup’
  4. Open your web browser (eg Chrome), navigate to a web page
  5. Login with your username and password.  Use the following username format:
    Staff: username@stir.ac.uk
    Students: username@students.stir.ac.uk
    and enter your password
  6. Click 'Login'
  7. On the “Welcome” screen click “Start”
  8. On the “Device Information” screen, add a device name and tap “Continue"
  9. On the device configuration screen tap “Get Cisco Network Setup Assistant Now”.  You will be directed to the Google Play Store
  10. Tap ‘Cisco Network Setup Assistant’
  11. Tap ‘Install’ to install the app
  12. Tap ‘Accept’ to the app give permission to proceed
  13. Tap ‘Open’ to open the installed app
  14. You should now see the Cisco Network Setup Asst: tap ‘Start’
  15. When the setup process is complete, tap ‘Exit’. Check you are connected to eduroam

 

If the previous method fails please try this.

  1. Go to "settings" on your phone
  2. Tap "Wi-Fi"
  3. Long tap "eduroam" and forget this network
  4. Tap "eduroam"
  5. Fill in the the following sections
    EAP method = PEAP
    Phase 2 authentication = MSCHAPV2
    CA Certificate = Leave blank
    Identity = 
    Staff should type their username in the format:
    username@stir.ac.uk
    Students should type their username in the format
    username@students.stir.ac.uk
    Anonymous Identity = leave blank
    Password = your network password
  6. Tap "connect"
  7. Check you are connected to eduroam

 

Chrome books, Linux devices, Windows Phones, Kindles etc

There is a backup method to get onto eduroam.  This replaces use of UOS Guest Internet as it is secure and should be easy to configure on most devices.

Instructions (these are guidelines - there may be some variation between different devices)

  • Connect your device to the 'eduroam' network
  • An 'Enter password' dialogue box will appear: enter your username in the format:
    • Staff: username@stir.ac.uk
    • Students: username@students.stir.ac.uk
  • Enter your network password
  • If any other fields are presented, leave them blank
  • Click login / OK
  • If asked, accept the certificate 'psn.ise.stir.ac.uk'
  • you will be connected to eduroam and your device should automatically connect from now on*.

*if you change your network password you will either be prompted to enter your new password for eduroam or if not prompted, you can: forget the eduroam network; restart your device; reconnect to eduroam (follow instructions above).
