Residences

Wi-Fi

All Stirling residences are now Wi-Fi enabled, to find out how to connect your device to our Wi-Fi, please go to our Wi-Fi pages

Network Sockets

The network sockets where present are not enabled.

If you think you have a pressing need to use a network socket please contact the Information Centre.  Your enquiry will be passed to our Network team for consideration and may be refused or accepted.

If you have a laptop or desktop PC without Wi-Fi connectivity, you can purchase a USB wireless adaptor from several local shops or online retailers. To ensure best performance, buy an adaptor that is 802.11n dual-band or 802.11ac standard.

Internet access in family accommodation

Where a registered (undergraduate or postgraduate) student of the University of Stirling is resident in University provided family accommodation, adult family members living with them for the duration of their stay will be entitled to apply for logon credentials to the University's wireless network service which will allow them access to the internet.

Procedure

Please fill in the Application for Internet access in Family Accommodation (paper copies available at the Accommodation Services office in Willow Court and at the Information Centre in the Library), and take it to Accommodation Services in Willow Court to have them complete the endorser section. Please bring the endorsed form to the Information Centre in the Library (IT desks) to have the request logged to our server team.

Systems and Network Services (SaNS) will create the user account within 48 hours of the request being logged by the Information Centre.  User account credentials  (username and Password) will either be sent via internal mail to the applicant at the accommodation address specified on the form, or made available via the Accommodation Services office.

The maximum duration of the account will be one year from the date of creation and expiry of the account will be automatic.  If an extension is required the user should request this at the Information Centre, providing their username, the username of the resident student, and the date to which they wish the account to be extended (Maximum of a further one year on each occasion).  The Information Centre will log the request.  SaNS will check that the user remains eligible, i.e. that all of the original criteria still apply, before extending the account as requested if appropriate to do so.  The user will be notified by email or mobile phone of the outcome of their request.

Policy/terms

The University is not permitted to provide internet access via JANET to “members of the public” except in very specific circumstances.

Registered students of the University are automatically provided with access to the University network, and thereby access to the internet over JANET, but members of their families would normally be regarded as members of the public with no right to access.

However, where a registered (undergraduate or postgraduate) student of the University of Stirling is resident in University provided family accommodation, adult family members living with them for the duration of their stay will be entitled to apply for logon credentials to the University network which will allow them access to the internet.

For the purposes of this policy “adult” means over the age of 18, and “living with them for the duration of their stay” explicitly excludes persons making short visits to the student resident. “University provided family accommodation” means accommodation operated by Residential Services which is specifically designated for use by families. “logon credentials” are also referred to herein as a “user account”.

The credentials will enable the user to connect their own devices (e.g. laptop, smartphone) to the University wireless network, using the UoS short term accounts connection which is available in every building on the campus and in off-campus residences.

Use of the University network and JANET is subject to the terms of the Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) of both organisations.

Infringement of the terms will result in withdrawal of the facility.

Minors resident on campus will not be provided with logon credentials. If an adult who is responsible for such a minor allows them internet access using their own user account, that adult should be aware that:

  • an account owner providing another person with account credentials (username and password) would be in breach of the University AUP, though logging on themselves and allowing the minor access, under supervision, could be considered an acceptable compromise.
  • the owner of a user account is fully responsible for all use made of it.
  • there is no content filtering on the University’s internet connection. Adults allowing minors access to the internet over this connection are advised to utilise Parental Controls on their device/browser. The University will accept no liability if a minor accesses content which is considered unsuitable for them.
