In-sessional English language course

Are your English language skills holding you back in your studies? Our In-sessional English course can help you achieve your full potential in your subject.

Designed for students who are already on their course, it bridges the gap between general English and the academic English needed to succeed at university. Delivered by INTO University of Stirling, you’ll benefit from specialist English language tutoring from experienced teaching staff.

Who can attend?

You can attend if you’re a non-native English speaker. A popular option with international students, we’ll give you priority if you have been specifically recommended these classes on entry into University. If you met but did not exceed our minimum English language requirements, you’ll have these classes timetabled in for you.

Any other students wishing to attend these classes should contact their Faculty for further information.

What’s covered in the course?

There are five In-sessional support classes each semester. The classes include practice in the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing within an academic context.

  • Reading: Skimming, scanning and reading text. Inferring meaning of unknown words. Distinguishing between fact and opinion.
  • Writing: Creating concise and coherent work. Paraphrasing, summarising and referencing.
  • Speaking: Effective participation in seminars and tutorials. Using stress, intonation and signposting for effect.
  • Listening: Identifying main points and supporting details. Developing effective note-taking strategies.
  • General academic skills: Time management, critical thinking, and independent learning strategies.

To make sure you’re effectively supported, there’s a needs analysis and ongoing feedback and assessment throughout the course. Each class builds-on the skills learnt from previous sessions and will include an end of session report.
