Welcome to the research pages for the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport.

We are a multi-disciplinary faculty with over 45 active research staff including academics in nursing, physiology, psychology, management, sociology, social marketing, public health, primary care and mental health.  We are supported by a very experienced administration team who enable our research success.

Our mission is to develop our existing research excellence within human health and sport by addressing 3 overarching themes:

  • Mechanisms of change researches how human behaviour and/or physiology change in relation to health and/or sport outcomes
  • Lifestyle and behaviour change researches strategies for favourable health and/or sport outcomes
  • Service delivery policy and practice examines effectiveness of existing health and/or sport policy

The Faculty has been successful in securing a large number of research grants from a variety of sources such as National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Chief Scientist’s Office (CSO), Medical Research Council (MRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Scottish Government, charities and industry.

We operate in a family friendly environment and actively encourage team work as a means of providing research leadership, mentorship and support for staff and research students. Our teamwork is achieved through our research groups, which demonstrate the multi-disciplinary nature of the faculty.  Evidence of our attainment can be seen by our achievement of: the highest UK REF 2014 score for research environment in Allied Health submission; being top in Scotland for Allied Health Research; and highest Scottish Sport submission for research outputs.
