Brexit – A Japanese Perspective

Should Britain be ashamed of Brexit? or see it as an opportunity?

Mr Nozomu Takaoka, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh, gives his personal view on this turbulent period of change and reflects on the wider global impact of advancing technology and widening income gaps. He discusses whether the current situation facing Britain is symptomatic of these changes, one which many countries will face in the future, and whether Britain and Japan can forge a new alliance as a result.

Nozomu Takaoka graduated from the University of Tokyo with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts. Later, he studied International Relations at Oxford University. An experienced diplomat, Mr Takaoka has worked around the world including two years as Consul General in Houston, USA, and official postings in New York, Egypt, Italy, Sweden and Iran. He became Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh in 2018. He is the author of four books (in Japanese) on world affairs.
