Create and Curate was a multi-disciplinary creative project based at HMP YOI Cornton Vale. Facilitated by the Art Collection’s Learning and Audience Development Curator, Sarah Bromage, the project participants each selected a work from the Art Collection that would inspire them to create their own art.
The project began with creative writing workshops where the participants created poetry inspired by their chosen piece supported by poet, Evlynn Sharp.
These writings then became the inspiration for the mixed-media works and sculptural ‘Poem-Houses’ that you see before you, a form – pioneered and shared by visual artist, Brigid Collins – which marries the power of words with strong visual imagery.
Participants were then involved in curating an exhibition in the Central Block of Cornton Vale displaying their Poem-Houses and written work alongside the pieces from the Art Collection that inspired them.
This exhibition is now on display in the Pathfoot Building at the University and showcases a selection of the work that was on display in the prison from January to August this year.
