CARA: A Lifeline to Academics at Risk, for over 80 years

15 Mar ‘16

6.30PM - 8.00PM
Speaker: Stephen Wordsworth, Executive Director of the Council for At-Risk Academics

Venue: Pathfoot Lecture Theatre, Pathfoot Building, University of Stirling

Please note this event will now begin at 6.30pm.

At 6.30pm on Tuesday 15 March 2016, Stephen Wordsworth, Executive Director of the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara –, will describe Cara’s work over more than eighty years to provide urgently-needed support to academics who have been forced to flee from persecution, suffering or conflict around the world.  In recent years many UK universities have played a vital role in supporting Cara’s mission, in particular by hosting ‘Cara Fellows’.  However, continuing crises, particularly in the Middle East, mean that Cara still needs the help of universities, their staff and students.

Stephen has been Executive Director of the Council for At-Risk Academics since 2012.  He is also Deputy Chair of the New York-based Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), a grouping of UN agencies and NGOs which works to protect schoolchildren, university students and teachers from conflict, instability and repression; and a Trustee of the British and Foreign School Society (BFSS), a UK educational charity which funds projects worldwide.  Before joining Cara, Stephen was a career member of the UK Diplomatic Service, where his last two posts were as Deputy Head of Mission in Moscow (2003-2005) and British Ambassador in Belgrade (2006-2010).

Come and learn more.  There will be an opportunity to ask questions afterwards.

All are welcome to attend this free event, no booking is required. For further information please contact Alexandru Sorlei at or see the Facebook event page.
