The Institute for Retail Studies

The Institute for Retail Studies was established in 1983 to act as a focus for the academic and applied study of the retail industry. It is now one of Europe’s largest University based retail institutes and has developed a reputation for offering a range of high quality education and training courses to the retail sector as well as undertaking research of an international standard.

The wide-ranging experience of the Institute for Retail Studies faculty helps to ensure that the BA (Hons) Retail Marketing course is practical and up to date with trends in the retail industry, as well as emphasising the specific skills valued by employers.

The aims of the Institute for Retail Studies are to:

  • Act as a centre for and to carry out academic and applied research into the retail industry
  • Provide a resource base for academic and industry-based researchers

    If you’ve taken exams over two sittings, repeated an exam, or been upgraded, the entrance requirements may be higher.

  • English language requirements

    You’ll need one of the following, in addition to a recognised approved diploma where the language of instruction was English:

    • IELTS 6.0 overall (no band less than 5.5)
    • Minimum C6 pass in English as First Language at GCE ‘O’ Level
    • TOEFL 567 (paper-based) or 87 (iBT) with Reading 22, Writing 21, Listening 21, Speaking 23
    • Successful completion of a recognized approved Diploma, where the language of instruction was English

Our Singapore-based Retail Marketing course is offered on a full-time or part-time (flexible) basis over a two-year period, and is developed by the University of Stirling and taught at the Singapore Institute of Management.

You’ll complete 10 advanced modules designed to provide you with an in-depth knowledge of retail marketing and enhance your employability in the sector.


The module details given below are subject to change as the University regularly revises and refreshes the curriculum of our taught programmes. The modules outlined below represent those offered in 2019/20 on this course of study.

Course details

  • Teaching

    A structured curriculum of nine modules is delivered by staff from the University of Stirling and supported by local tutors over two semesters per year.

    Classes are conducted in the day and/or during the evenings. Each module will comprise of 25 hours of lectures and 15 hours of tutorials.

    Timetabled classes typically take the form of lectures, workshops and seminars. Lectures and briefing sessions are intended primarily to provide you with background information (sometimes working through examples and case studies), and a starting point and guide to further reading.

    Workshops and seminars are held in small groups and involve group and individual tasks, active discussion and debate. These sessions are designed to enable you to develop both intellectual and practical skills.

  • Assessment

    Assessment is based on a combination of coursework and exams. There is an exam period at the end of each semester. While exams do form part of the assessment for most modules, no module is assessed exclusively by examination (usually exams account for 50 percent or less of the final grade). You’ll also write a dissertation on a retail-related topic with the support of a supervisor.

  • Classroom hours

    The course includes a structured curriculum of nine modules spread over two semesters per year. Each module comprises 25 hours of lectures and 15 hours of tutorials.

  • Study abroad

    You can choose to study in the UK at the University of Stirling campus during your 3rd semester, where you'll be expected to complete modules equivalent to 60 credits. The experience is designed to enhance your global outlook and mind-set, and prepare you to work better in a global economy.

    The programme fee doesn't include air fares and accommodation for the exchange semester at Stirling.
