Describe your career history to date:
I joined Snedden Campbell as a Project Coordinator after graduating before moving on to work for the Adecco Group (Office Angels) as a Recruitment Consultant then Senior Consultant. I joined Blue Arrow as a Senior Consultant in 2011 and then the Robertson Group in May 2012.
What attracted you to your current career?
The Robertson Group was previously a client of mine and I knew they were a good company to work for. The projects the company undertakes connect and support communities which I think is important. I was keen to make the transition from agency to internal recruitment as disliked the stereotype of being a Recruitment Consultant difficult. I have good coordination skills, build strong working relationships easily, work well under pressure and deadlines and I am able to multi-task effectively. All of these skills are important when considering Recruitment/Resourcing as a career.
How did you get into your current job?
The position was advertised on S1 Jobs however I was previously known to the business and I know that definitely helped me secure the job.
Describe what your current job involves:
Currently responsible for sourcing and recruiting staff to all parts of the Robertson Group, as well as managing the end-to-end recruitment process, and producing regular reports and statistics for use at monthly Board Meetings. Additionally, I am responsible for implementing the company’s Young People Strategy which involves creating and implementing development programmes for Graduates/Interns/Apprentices/Trainees across the business.
Describe a typical working day:
Dealing with emails and phone calls from managers, external training providers (when recruiting for apprentices and also for dealing with existing apprentices within the group), external recruitment agencies, Universities (invites to graduate recruitment fairs, industrial placement coordination, invites to speak at career seminars etc.), local councils (regarding work experience programmes for school students, apprenticeships etc.), processing internal requests for recruitment, advertising vacancies, reviewing applications and short listing, updating the hiring managers, arranging interviews, attending meetings, submitting reports, coordinating new starts, arranging temp cover where required within the business, negotiating agency fees, providing recruitment advice, updating the company profile on LinkedIn.
In what way did your time at Stirling shape your career to date?
My degree has been very useful. The analytical skills have been invaluable as my role involves undertaking research on marketplace salaries and positions and identifying requirements. Submissions to the Board always include graphs and figures. Economics is an excellent source of transferable skills.
List three things that you love about your job:
- Fast paced nature
- Being given the responsibility to implement the Young People Strategy which is brand new for Robertson
- Working as part of the Group HR team
List three things you dislike about your job:
- Not enough hours in the day
- Dealing with constant cold calls from Recruitment Agencies
- Ensuring managers follow the correct recruitment procedures can be frustrating
What advice would you give to current students in terms of preparing for life after graduation?
All experience is good experience. Don’t give up on a position too quickly even if you don’t enjoy it - it’s character building! If you are a determined, hardworking and passionate individual you will get where you want to be. Commonly graduates expect positions to be handed to them and that they will have a certain level of authority within a business straight away. This is not the case, you must prove yourself but you will progress quickly if you are committed.
