If you already have some teaching experience or an education degree but want to learn more, this Masters course will be ideal for you. It combines a strong educational element with a focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). The design of the course also makes it suitable if you want to teach subjects other than English.

You’ll graduate with a solid grounding in the principles of language learning and teaching, as well as an understanding of research methods in TESOL. During your studies, you’ll be taught by TESOL professionals who have experience of working all over the world, as well as visiting local schools to learn about the pastoral role of teachers – particularly in relation to issues of difference, diversity and inclusion.

    Our Education Studies and TESOL course is designed to give you:

    As one of our TESOL students, you’ll be able to take advantage of the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages in 33 European countries through Erasmus+ traineeships, or through our partnership with the São Paulo State University in Brazil. These placement opportunities also provide you with a chance to network with colleagues in other institutions and share valuable knowledge.

  • Academic requirements

    A minimum of a second class honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply.

    You’ll also need to demonstrate familiarity with the school context from a professional point of view, either through having a year’s teaching experience or having taken a teaching degree in your home country.

  • English language requirements

    If English is not your first language you must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of your English language skills:

    • IELTS 6.5 with minimum 6.0 in speaking and listening and minimum 6.5 in reading and writing
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Grade B or above
    • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) Grade B or above
    • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE) 60 with a minimum 60 in reading and writing and minimum 56 in speaking and listening
    • IBT TOEFL 90 with no sub-test lower than 20

Course Details

  • Teaching

    Each module’s teaching methods are tailored to suit the module’s content, but could include lectures, workshops and student presentations. You’ll also benefit from input by key players in the field of TESOL, who are invited to deliver workshops and seminars in our English Language Teaching and Research event series.

  • Assessment

    For each 20-credit module you’ll be asked to produce a piece of work equivalent to a 3,000 word essay that matches the learning outcomes of the module. These pieces of work could include presentations, annotated bibliographies, essays or research proposals.

  • Study abroad

    As a student on our MSc Education Studies and TESOL course you have the fantastic opportunity to gain valuable work experience teaching English to speakers of English as a foreign language in 33 European countries through Erasmus+ traineeships.

    The University of Stirling has also developed close working partnerships with two universities around the world to make finding a placement as seamless as possible and give you tailored teaching and learning opportunities. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for a placement with:

    Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany

    Undertake class observation, small-group supervision and teaching assistance in a local high school. During the school holiday, you will have a chance to work with materials development or with writing support at the university.

    Széchenyi István University, Hungary

    Get involved in class observation and teaching at the university or the university’s practice school.

    Home/EU Students

    Fees shown are for full-time, one-year Masters course*

    If you’re domiciled in Scotland, you may be eligible to apply to the Students Award Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for a loan of up to £10,000 to cover your tuition fees and associated living costs. Students domiciled in the EU can also apply for tuition fee support, although may not be eligible to receive funding to support living costs.

    If you're domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you should be eligible to apply for a loan from your regional body.

    English students apply for a loan of up to £10,609 per year as part of the UK Postgraduate Loan Scheme, Welsh students can apply for a non-means tested loan of up to £13,000 from the Welsh Government and Northern Irish students are eligible to apply for support of up to £5,500.

    *Fees for students who apply for a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

    If the course is taken over two years then the fee will be split evenly over the two years. Fees are not pro-rated for students who enrol on a Masters course and decide to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma - the full fee is charged.

    Fees shown are for full-time, one-year Masters course. Fees for students who apply for a Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate will be paid on a pro-rata basis.

    If the course is taken over two years then the fee will be split evenly over the two years. Fees are not pro-rated for students who enrol on a Masters course and decide to exit with a Postgraduate Diploma - the full fee is charged.

    Please note: You will be liable to pay tuition fees for every year you’re in attendance, and your fees will be held level upon entry. If you need to extend your period of study, you may be liable for an additional fee.

  • Scholarships

    This course is currently approved for Postgraduate Tuition Fee Loan funding from the Student Awards Agency Scotland.

  • Additional costs

    If you choose to attend your graduation ceremony, you will be liable for an additional charge. There is no charge if you wish to graduate in absentia. Learn more about additional fees.

  • Cost of living

    If you’re domiciled in the UK, you can typically apply to your relevant funding body for help with living costs. This usually takes the form of student loans, grants or bursaries, and the amount awarded depends upon your personal circumstances and household income.

    EU and overseas students won’t normally be able to claim living support through SAAS or other UK public funding bodies. You should contact the relevant authority in your country to find out if you’re eligible to receive support. .
