Tips for success:

  • Use social media: Social media can be  a fantastic tool for finding work. These are great places to promote yourself and your skills.
  • Make contacts: Use Twitter and LinkedIn to network  – find relevant people to follow, make contacts and suggest meeting up.
  • Apply for jobs effectively: If you're just emailing your CV to lots of random companies in the hope that one of them will have a job, stop! Pick up the phone instead. Be confident and introduce yourself explain how you'd love to work there and enquire if there are any opportunities.
  • Tailor your CV: one CV does not fit all jobs. Take time to highlight the relevant skills for the job and employer.
  • Do your homework: make sure you understand what’s going on in the sector and with the employer you are targeting
  • Don't forget the smaller companies:  the big graduate schemes are not the only option. Don't dismiss small to medium sized companies (SMEs, with less than 250 employees) that's where the bulk of graduate vacancies lie. Thousands of SMEs are desperate to hire graduates but they may not advertise in the obvious places, so do some extra work to track them down
