Sheep Resting on the Shore
(Oil on canvas, 1997)
Born in Glasgow, Margot Sandeman studied at Glasgow School of Art where she met Joan Eardley who became a lifelong friend. After graduating she worked briefly at Bletchley Park. Her marriage to the potter and ceramicist James Robson in 1946 was followed by the birth of two sons, and the family bought a summer house on Arran. By 1970 she had won the Royal Scottish Academy's prestigious Guthrie Award and the Society of Scottish Artists’ Redpath Award. In 1989 she won the Scottish section of the Laing Painting Competition. She worked prolifically en plein air and from memory in the studio as well as collaborating with her old contemporary Ian Hamilton Finlay on his texts.
