Black Cockatoo Flying from a Dark Wood
Born in San Raphael, France in 1928, the son of painter Anne Redpath, and younger brother of Alastair Michie, David Michie studied at the Edinburgh College of Art (1946-1953, where he was taught by William Gillies) and was then awarded a travelling scholarship to Italy where he travelled with fellow student John Houston. He went on to lecture at Gray's in Aberdeen and at ECA from where he retired in 1990 as Head of School of Drawing and Painting. He was Emeritus Professor of Heriot Watt University.
While teaching he also painted and exhibited, both in Edinburgh at the Scottish Gallery and in London at the Mercury Gallery. After retirement he was able to devote more time to painting and exhibited regularly, marking his 80th birthday with a major exhibition at the Scottish Gallery in 2008.
This artwork (one of two in the collection) was part of the Scottish Arts Council bequest.
