Skin Deep by Tony Higgins
Skin Deep
(Oil, 1980s)

This painting is based on a computer-generated image of a protein molecule published in a Scientific American article, and on René Magritte’s painting Le Château des Pyrénées. It was created by Tony Higgins who was an Honours student, studying Physics at the University of Stirling in the 1980s. The seven segments of the protein molecule represent the seven Physics teaching staff at the time.  The ‘world’ was added by the student to recognise the important teaching contribution of one of the Physics research staff. This painting was given to the Physics Department in 1985 and transferred to the Art Collection in 1999.
