A Polish-born painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and writer, Henryk Gotlib trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (1908-1910) and then at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna (1911–13) and the Munich Academy of Fine Art (1913–14). During the 1920s he lived and exhibited in Paris and was also art correspondent to the Warsaw Times. He met his wife in 1938 during a visit to London and settled in England, where he remained until his death.
