Born in Dunfermline, James Cumming studied at Edinburgh College of Art (though his studies were interrupted by the Second World War when he was an RAF pilot). He then taught at the ECA from 1950 until the early 80s. He was associated with the 'Edinburgh School' of painters which included Sir Robin Philipson and William Gillies, both close artistic and academic associates.
