Colin Cina

MH10 by Colin Cina
(Acrylic on canvas, 1979)

Born in Glasgow in 1943, Colin Cina studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Central School of Art and Design, before going on to paint and exhibit in the UK and abroad, and also to teach. He was appointed the first Dean of Art at Chelsea College of Art 1998-2003. After a trip to the USA in 1966, Cina began painting minimal ‘Colour-field’ works. The M.H. series, which he began in 1969, features angled lines in paired colour combinations against a constant vertical notation. 'My paintings cannot be considered as pure abstraction. Their intention is a shade closer to the pictorial traditions in painting than to the known extremes in abstract art.' Colin Cina
