John Bellany CBE RA (1942-2013)

Woman of the North by John Bellany
Woman of the North Sea
(Etching, 1995)

Born in Port Seton, John Bellany studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. In 1986 he became the first artist to have a one-man show in the National Portrait Gallery, London and his work is held in numerous collections and national galleries internationally. His work is influenced by the Calvinistic coastal communities from which he came. Many of Bellany’s paintings contain the fishing community (his family were fishermen and boatbuilders), either oil paintings of harbours, or portraits of the fishing community people and are filled with allegory and symbolism.

As well as this etching there are also two John Bellany paintings in the collection.
