Information Services is pleased to introduce the Maker Space in the University Library. The Maker Space contains facilities for 3D scanning, 3D printing and learning about the basics of coding.
The space is open to all students to enhance their digital creativity skills, which are increasingly relevant across all disciplines.
The Maker Space is in a new space on Level 2 (entry level) of the Library. Access is controlled by a keycode lock. When you have had an introductory session from one of our staff or volunteers, you will be given the combination code so that you can access the Space yourself thereafter.
- 1 Ultimaker 2+ and 1 Ultimaker 3
- 2 Robox 3D printers (one dual head/one single head)
- 2 handheld scanners
- 2 3D Doodle pens
- Lego mindstorms kit (2)
- 2 PCs with necessary software for scanning/ downloading designs / creating designs
- Glowforge (awaiting air filter!) - not yet in use
In 2017, IS put in a bid to the Stirling Fund for a Glowforge laser cutter. We won our award and the laser cutter is now in the Maker Space. However, we are still awaiting delivery of the essential air filter. This is currently scheduled for Spring 2019 delivery.
Our aim is to have the Maker Space staffed with a volunteer most mornings and afternoons during semester.
So if you are interested in learning about 3D printing, design or scanning, just pop in and ask the volunteer for an intro session.
When you have attended an intro session, you will be given the code to access the room.
At the moment, we are not charging for print jobs but if you are expecting to be doing large print jobs or a high volume of printing, please let us know. In the future, we may have to introduce a charging mechanism if costs start to escalate.
The Maker Space is open to those who have had training throughout Library opening hours.
Interested in using the Maker Space?
If you're interested in using the Maker Space, please email us or pop into the Info Centre on Level 2 of the Library (IT end).
We'll put you in touch with one of our student volunteers who will take you through the basic induction.
