Sport at Stirling
In a world where sport has become a science, and health and wellbeing a global driver, Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence must have the best sporting facilities. The aim is to enhance and expand a vibrant sporting culture that allows everyone, from beginner to international athlete, to participate in sport in a collaborative place where academic, social and sporting activities abound.
The aims are to increase participation in sport in Scotland and build new state-of-the art sports facilities housed within an iconic building. Refurbishment will create a natural flow and greater connectivity within the internal space to ensure the facilities both meet the needs of all the users and inspire everyone to get involved in sport. A café together with social and retail spaces will complete this flagship project. The redevelopment also allows the University to reconfigure the internal space to capitalise on, and link with, the unique natural and beautiful environment of the campus. The floor plan for the new facility is future-proofed to include flexible multi-purpose space.
FaulknerBrowns, the award winning architectural practice, has developed a plan following full consultation with a cross-section of students, staff and stakeholders to ensure Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence remains best in class and continues to raise the standards for the future of sport. The proposed timeline for completion and opening of a new facility is Autumn 2019.
The building will cost £20m and University is inviting friends and alumni to invest in the project. Naming opportunities are available for the new facility and for designated spaces within the new sports centre. All donors – who wish to be recognised – will be included on a donor wall within the building. This important project will:
- revolutionise the first impressions of arrival onto campus
- transform the facilities for all users;
- provide a hub for innovative new research;
- improve the student experience;
- enhance the University’s international reputation.
In addition, the University wishes to create an endowment fund that enables new sporting scholarships and further coaching support for our elite athletes.
