What co-and/or extra-curricular activities have you participated in during your time at Stirling?
In 1st year I signed myself up to loads of sports clubs and societies that definitely kept me busy during the ‘give it a go’ week –and ever since! Looking back I am so pleased I pushed myself to get involved from day one because being a part of this aspect of university life has definitely been a highlight for me. Holding committee positions is also really good fun and a chance to get more involved in a club or society that you really enjoy being a part of, and is also great for boosting your CV and impressing employers!
Why did you choose to engage in these specific activities compared to others available?
I chose to engage in the Business Club and the Triathlon Club in particular because I felt like those were the two clubs that I really enjoyed going to. I have also held committee positions for both (as Treasurer) and have had the opportunity to be a part of some amazing activities including competing in the BUCS Triathlon Championships in Wiltshire to organising a Business Trip to Rome.
What key skills do you think you have developed as a result of engaging in these activities?
I have learned so much from my involvement in clubs and societies, all of which I believe have helped me with my employability and ultimately helped me secure a graduate scheme. Working effectively as a team, time management, and leadership are some of the skills that have really stood out for me personally. I believe that you can really develop these skills through extra-curricular activities including sports clubs or societies, especially if you hold committee positions.
What advice would you give to 1st year students thinking about getting involved in activities out with their studies?
I think the best piece of advice that I would give to any 1st year student is to just push yourself to get involved in the clubs and societies that you think you might be interested in. These clubs are all really welcoming and are a great opportunities to make friends for life, and there are so many to choose from! I know that it can be really hard at the beginning to push yourself out of your comfort zone but trust me in saying that all of us were 1st years at some point and know exactly how you’re feeling, so give it a go and you won’t regret it!
