Redesign of acute health services in NHS Fife

This three year project examined the potential for the more extensive use of systems analysis tools in support of healthcare redesign in NHS Fife. The project developed MS Visio based models to construct more flexible and rigorous models of patient pathways, while enhancing the transparency of the analysis of the healthcare system. The pathway models were developed working with a variety of NHS staff, providing a structure for identifying current inefficiencies and potential improvements. Further developments used simulation to extend the pathway analyses, investigating patient flows and the effects of variability in more detail. A series of models was produced, adopting the principle of model reuse in applications in the design of Accident and Emergency and outpatient clinics.
